1.11.2017

Report crop 2017

Harvest 2017 started around August 18th with variety Saaz and finished about September 15th with latest varieties Kazbek and Saaz Late.

Gennerally was harvest influed by:

-       cool spring mainly begginning of May

-       very hot and dry June

-     pretty humid weather with warm temperatures between July 1st and start of the harvest in western part of the Czech Republic - Saaz and Auscha areas, Trschitz area was hit by dry weather without rainfalls

The situation looked very bad at the end of June when big part of hop roots did not reach the top of the constructions, but improved during July and begginning of August

Preliminary guess of the results:

Saaz variety

-       grown on 4.059 ha guessed yield per ha 1,15-1,20 t/ha (long term average 1,18 t/ha)

-       estimated production        4.670-4.870 t

Sladek variety

-       grown on 263 ha guessed yield per ha 2,2-2,4 t/ha (long term average 2,4 t/ha)

-       estimated production        580-630 t

Premiant variety

-       grown on 165 ha guessed yield   1,8-2,0 t/ha (long term average 2,1 t/ha)

-       estimated production        295-330 t

Saaz Late variety

-       grown on 41 ha guessed yield  1,9 t/ha

-       estimated production        80 t

Agnus variety

-       grown on 38 ha guessed yield 2,0-2,2 t/ha (long term average 2,2 t/ha)

-       estimated production        76-84 t

Kazbek variety

-       grown on 22 ha guessed yield 2,3 t/ha

-       estimated production        about 50 t

Saaz Special (privat Top Hop variety)

-       grown on 19 ha estimated production around 30 t

All others (Bohemie, Cascade,Perle, Tradition, Harmonie, Rubin, Gaia, Boomerang and trials)

-       grown on 22 ha guessed yield 1,5 t/ha

-       estimated production around 33 t

Totally we expect  5.800 - 6.200 t what seems like very average crop from the point of view of production. Better yield was this year due pleasant weather in areas Saaz and Auscha than in Trschitz what is pretty unusual. Better yield was also given by irrigated hopgardens and younger plants till 10 years of its age.

For other varieties as well as for private variety Saaz special we do not have enough datas.

Conclusion: Crop 2017 we can call as very average harvest as far as per ha yield regards.

Alpha content are slight underaverage for almost all varieties, but not enough for alpha clause application.

Contracts will be very probably filled up, some underdeliveries can be expected mainly for variety Premiant where low yield, low alpha and decreased acreage is the worst.

Spot market can exist as a only very little mainly for Saaz and a little bit for Sladek varieties.

In combination with big crop 2016 which is in some still now shipped into brewerires could be situation between real demand and real production very good balanced with just very little discrepiences on one or other side.

Preliminary crop report 2017

19. 9. 2017

The harvest started around August 20th and is finishing with last varieties (Kazbek, Saaz Late) in recent days.

It seems due to high temperatures in June and improving weather during July and beginning August it could be very average crop as far as per ha yield regards.

Saaz variety - the harvest is over- it was a little bit better in Saaz and Auscha area and worse in Trschitz area due different weather during summer.

We assume total yield per ha somewhere around 1,15 MT/ha what gives us from acreage 4.321 ha quantity total around 5.000 MT.

Alpha content is about 10-15% weaker than average we assume value 2,8-3,0%, again a little bit better in  Saaz and Auscha, weaker in Trschitz.

Sladek variety - the harvest is finishing right now - seems to be weak average, we assume 2,1 MT/ha what gives us from acreage  291 ha total around  600 MT.

Alpha content we assume between 6,5-6,8%, what is long term average although we do not have enough analysis yet.

Premiant variety is weaker average we assume 1,8 MT/ha what gives us from acreage 165 ha total around 300 MT. We feel big lack of Premiant and most probably customers could be able to buy additional 100 MT of this variety.

Alpha content we assume about 8,0% what is sligthly below average.

All other varieties like Saaz Late, Agnus, Kazbek have got average yield and alphas and demand-offer is well balanced.

Gennerally we see will not be spot market for crop 2017, is possible that will be some slight (up to 10%) underdeliveries for forward contracts, but because breweries are well saturated from the crop 2016, it should not be a problem. Some more serious shortage can be for variety Premiant only. Weak average crop 2017 should not push into further crop 2018, so next crop will be again "gamble from the clean table".

Press release 4. 9. 2013

Budweiser Budvar has brewed a special beer from fresh hops

Yesterday evening special batch of beer from fresh hops was brewed in the brewhouse Budweiser Budvar. Cones of Saaz hops were harvested on the 3rd September in the morning at the hopgarden "Splav" near the village Blšany. Just 400 hectoliters were brewed so called The BUD Premier Select. Due to the extremely long period of maturation, the beer reaches its maturity in the second half of March 2014 and will be available in selected restaurants across the country.

Under the supervision of the head brewmaster of Budweiser Budvar and representatives of the hop-growing company ARIX Co. yesterday evening a special batch of beer was brewed using fresh hop cones. Fresh hop cones are among the rarest brewing raw materials, as they have to be processed immediately after the harvest, on the same day they are picked. For this reason, this brewer recipe is used only exceptionally and this year Budweiser Budvar will probably be the only Czech brewery that to produce fresh hops brewed beer.

Hops the Saaz variety - a total of 360 kg - was harvested on Tuesday 3rd September in the morning at the a hopgarden "Splav", which belongs to the famous area "Valley of the Golden Stream" in the Land hop growing region (area) Blšany. Hops were supplied by the company ARIX Co. one of the leading hops suppliers companies on the Czech market. Already around the 4 p.m. the fresh harvested hops were added to a special 16% beer and with the final alcohol content of 7,5% vol.

"The hopping was made in the traditional way, the same as for all our other beers, thats means by adding manually cone hops directly into the copper in three doses. Fresh hops give to the beer a large amount of aromatic substances and fairly distinct, but still fine bitterness, in comparison with dried hops, "says Adam Broz, head brewmaster of Budweiser Budvar.

This year BUD Premier Select was brewed in a volume 400 hectoliters of beer. Beer brewed on the 3rd September 2013, customers will be able to sample in the second half of March 2014, as the maturation period of the beer is around 200 days. Special beer from fresh hops will be delivered only in selected restaurants and beerhouse brasseries across the country in barrels of 20 liters.

For the first time the beer from fresh hop was brewed by Budweiser Budvar last year in August. "At that time there was nobody in our brewery who had experience with fresh hops. We were very pleasantly surprised by the result. And beer fans drank the whole batch within a few days. Therefore, this year, this special beer is brewed again, "says Adam Brož.

Press release 10. 6. 2013

Influence of the floods 2013 on the hops and hopgardens

Steady rains and overflowing streams that hit in the Czech Republic a few days ago and especially around the Elbe and Eger river in recent days did not avoid even hopgardens. It flooded a large part of the hopgardens area.

Most damaged by floods are hopgardens in the Auscha hop-growing region. There was flooded approximately 200 ha, out of 140 ha was 100% total damaged and on 60 ha we can estimate on average of 50% damages.

Further damages due to the floods was caused in the Saaz hop-growing region around the Eger river, on 180 ha area. It caused 100% total damage on approximately 72 ha and partial damages on 108 ha (on average 45%). Another 150 ha was flooded in Rakovnicko area with estimated damages on vegetation on average 30%.

"Total damages on the hopgardens due to floods and rains are on the area 530 ha out of which were completely destroyed harvest on the area 212 ha and on the area 318 ha to damage range from 5% to 80%. Overall estimates of damages to the crop destruction and renewal of hop plants and necessary repair and renewal of constructions on commodity hops are guessed in the amount of approximately CZK 90 million", summarizes the extent of the damages Bohumil Pázler, chairman of The Hop Growers Association of the Czech Republic.

"We register hopgardens that were flooded up to three-quarters height of the construction, ie above the vegetation top of growing plants and the hops will most likely completely damaged. Some growers had flooded the total production area. In addition to the current weather and rainfall forecast may be far greater damage", added Michal Kovařík, secretary of The Hop Growers Association of the Czech Republic.

After last year's damages to crops due to frost and associated factors of up to CZK 140 million, this year's floods are another hit for hop growers who grow hops world-class. From the above it is clear that it will be necessary to plant new areas and to do investment in both construction and also in technology.

For the time being is recorded by ÚKZÚZ 4.339 ha hop production areas. Statistics are an annual officially concluded in mid-August.

Floods and hailmstorms in Czech Republic

In the first week of June the Czech Republic was hit by the heaviest flood since 2002.

Hopgardens in Saaz area (about 120 ha) were also flooded, due to overflowing of the river Ohře and local stress, but the water was relatively quickly drained away and it is expected that the affected areas could achieve 50-80% of the normal yield.
The situation was worse in the Auscha area where the Elbe flooded about 120 ha - around 50 ha is almost completely destroyed, and this area can't be expected have harvest. Another about 70 ha will suffer a damage of roughly 50%.
Floods in the first week of June did't affect PP sevis's farms, Tufa, neither Arix's supplier.

Staňkovice 5. 6. 2013

Počedělice (Saaz area) 10. 6. 2013

Unfortunately, local storms, hail and flooding on Sunday 9th June caused more severe losses.
Local hail in the western part of Saaz areas affected around 50 ha hopgardens and fully destroyed them. Unfortunately, there are run by suppliers.
In addition, local flooding around Kryry and Blšany hit 83 ha hopgardens, of which about 20 ha were completely destroyed, and for the rest we estimated drop in production by 20-50%.

Vědomice (Auscha area) 10. 6. 2013

It is obvious that climate events from early June will have a further negative impact on the amount of crop production in 2013, which was already considered insufficient to fully satisfy the, due to reduction to hectare areas in the recent years.

Czech scientists find way to treat ulcers with hops

PRAHA - Hops, that people associate with beer, could become a natural medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcers and inflammations. A team of experts from the Research Institute for Food at Thomayer Hospital and the Research Institute of Brewing and Malting made a laboratory discovery that the effects of especially treated hops were similar to the effects of antibiotics. Journalists were informed by Pavel Čermák, a member of the team.

Gastric ulcers and inflammations are caused by a bacteria called H. pylori whose prolonged effects contribute to stomach cancer. Antibiotics and other medications with an effect on the mucous membrane of the stomach represent the basis of the therapy.

Natural substances

In some patients the treatment fails and the ulcer recurs after some time. According to Mr. Čermák, the Head Physician at Thomayer Hospital, this puts natural substances, especially those of herbal origin, into focus.

The team developed a new method of pressurised treatment which makes it possible to store hops for a long time without affecting the change to its properties which naturally occurs during the drying procedure. According to Čermák, the team from Thomayer Hospital succeeded in the collection of H. pylori strains from patients with a stomach disease in which the effects of hops treated this way have been tested. "It was found that the effects of hops treated this way are almost the same as the effects of antibiotics", said Čermák.

Hops works as an antibiotic.

Analysis of the effects of some substances isolated from hops indicates a possible presence of thus far unknown substances in antibiotic properties. "Based on the results of the research the proposals for using hops as a food supplement in some infections caused by H. pylori have been submitted", he said.

Beer loses the active substances.

He thinks, that the advantage of the proposed food supplements is that the hops are used in their natural form. "Therefore, the active substances are not lost by drying or dilution as for example in the case of brewing", he added.

Alexandr Mikyška from the Research Institute of Brewing and Malting added that in addition to the substances with antibacterial properties hops contain a number of other substances with favourable effects, such as herbal estrogens, substances with anti-cancer effects and antioxidants.

As we brewed beer. . .

Green Bud justifies its reputation

I love secret beers and limited editions that are only on the market for a few days, for they turn an ordinary day into a holiday because they usually offer a beer with a unique aroma and taste. This is doubly true of the BUD Premier Select Limited Edition as they used entirely fresh hops during its brewing at Budweiser Budvar. In co-operation with Arix a. s., everything took place within a single day.
On 28 August, Saaz hops (Žatecký poloraný červeňák) were picked in a hop garden near Žatec (Saaz) and were immediately transported to České Budějovice, where hop-growers along with brewhouse operating staff poured the green cones into a wort boiling kettle without any treatment.

“Fresh hops give the beer a larger amount of aromatic substances and a fairly distinct bitterness. Brewer’s yeasts then add a fine yeasty flavour that increases its natural richness and improves its overall sensory characteristics,” says Ing. Adam Brož, PhD., head brewer of Budweiser Budvar National Corporation.
The BUD Premier Select limited edition with a volume of 400 hectolitres had an exceptionally long maturation time of 200 days. Fresh hops provide the BUD Premier Select Limited Edition with several exclusive features: a distinctively fresh smell and flavour with an impressive hoppy aroma, a pronounced hop taste and a higher bitterness of the beer. It will be brewed once a year in the years to come so Budweiser Budvar can again combine their unique own water from a 300 metre deep artesian well and select Moravian malt with the freshly harvested Žatec hops.
The BUD Premier Select Limited Edition was brewed in two mashes; horizontal lager tanks were used during its lagering and fresh brewer’s yeasts were added to the unfiltered Kellerbier before being filled into barrels. When tasting it, one cannot miss the rich and dense head that is formed thanks to the influence of the hop compounds. Considering the fact that only light barley malt was used during its brewing, the special beer has a golden colour. The fresh undried aromatic hops have lent an extraordinarily strong hoppy aroma to the beer. It will engage one’s attention with its richness owing to the higher amount of residual extracts and alcohol content. Furthermore, as it is an unfiltered Kellerbier one can experience the fresh aroma of brewer’s yeasts when drinking it.
At an optimum serving temperature of approx. 6 degrees Celsius, the BUD Premier Select Limited Edition will raise the spirits very quickly and, in view of the fact that the alcohol presence is very well hidden, it does not have the effect of a strong special after the first sips. On the contrary, the distinct freshness of the hop aroma as well as the delicate bitterness encourage more drinking. However, a very rapid absorption of alcohol remains a substantial property of this beer, so it has a disproportionately more marked effect within a short time than some wines or Belgian beer specials, the alcohol volume of which is in fact higher.

The BUD Premier Select Limited Edition represents another telling proof that during the brewing of unique beers it is not the size of the brewery but the willingness to put a maximum of energy, ideas, honesty and, above all, brewer’s heart into this process that is crucial.
